It is a well known fact that people commit crimes based on the punishment applicable for the crimes. Armed robbery though a violent crime is not as common as other vices because armed robbers are usually killed in action, even when caught in action are usually killed by Nigerians or shot by the police (before ay formal trial) or when arrested are usually sentenced to death by the courts.
Compare this to the widespread and wicked looting of the public treasury by the same people that were either voted in or rigged their ways into public office in Nigeria with very minimal and ineffective punishment for the guilty ones.
On radio, TVs, newspapers etc corruption is campaigned against yet nothing is done to deter would be looters and the result is that looters are devising more and more ways to steal money belonging to the people knowing fully well that nothing serious would come out of it even if caught in the act with all the evidence in the world.
The recent N6.2B Rural Electrification Agency (REA) scam is a case that should make every single well meaning Nigerian to have pity for this country.
The disturbing thing here is that some vocal Nigerians in the Power Probe that saw contractors abused, Nigerians misinformed, unnecessary delays in different projects and the alleged N100M bribe are(?) fingered in this REA scam and this smacks of sheer wickedness and unadulterated hypocrisy by the very people that want Nigerians to believe that they are fighting for them.
Would our leaders willingly loot the public treasury if we had a working death penalty plan in place with zero tolerance for convicted looters?
China is working today (economically) because it does not tolerate the type of corruption and looting of public treasury that we tolerate in this country. China does not pay lip service to issues concerning corruption. Leaders from all works of life once convicted are put to death. Very simple and efficient strategy.
The country (China) is better off today economically than almost all the developed countries that oppose capital punishment just to be politically correct but I guess China does what is best for the people of China and not what is best for the international community and this is very commendable.
Let Nigerians do what is right and see whether things will not change for the better.
Picture this, every other month a convicted ex-governor, law maker, public office holder etc is publicly executed for looting of public treasury and other economic crimes that destroy this country.
Who then would want to steal from the national, state or LGA coffers knowing fully well that once convicted would be tied to a stake and publicly executed where the same people you have stolen from and oppressed with the stolen money would see you breathe your last?
Lagosians today do their best to obey traffic rules. These rules have always been there but this time around very stiff penalties await offenders or defaulters and the roads in Lagos today are free from abandoned broken down molues and parked cars that tend to cause unnecessary traffic jams.
As a matter of fact Nigerians are now using seat belts (even though vehicles naturally come with these seat belts), even okada riders and their passengers now use crash helmets. What really happened? Why are Nigerians now obeying the laws?
